The Dallas Brawl Update Files copyright 1991 ~ 1997 Mr. David R. Dorrycott

Back in late 1991 I stumbled across a little monthly digest published by Mrs. Mel. White. Mel was an old friend and, to be honest my writing barely reached the minimum level required to join this group. Still in October 1991 I became a member of one of the most fun writing groups I’ve ever come across next to Colin Pinnel’s Urx Universes.. Now the DBU as it was normally called, was basically a monthly pie-fight-on-paper. It was fun, it had a PG-13 limit on material (which we all tended to find ways around now and then) and I learned a great deal interacting with others. What you will find here is a selection of various ‘zaps’ as seen from my side. Though other peoples characters are used the files presented are what was published. Thus if you see LR=>JA it means I am ‘zapping’ or interacting with, in this case, Mr. Johnny Amburn. Back then I wrote as Lord Rees, an SCA title I held. I no longer use any pen-name, yet as I wrote under that name for ten years or so it is best that I admit it here. All characters are listed as to who belonged to whom of where I can remember. Stories or Zaps were limited to three pages. Most were only a page and well, to be bluntly honest since your only seeing my side, a lot of really funny material is left wanting. Also being basically a fanzine, the DBU had its share of stories based in popular and not so popular fiction of the time. From Star Trek to Star Wars to Princess Bride to Dr. Who. Whatever happened to float a particular writers boat at the moment. In my case my main characters ship is loosely based upon a Star Fleet Battles (tm) Heavy Oar Carrier. Those were fun times long gone. I understand as of this writing that perhaps the Brawl will live again. One may only hope. Some work was done ‘outside the Brawl’, meaning it was simply between myself and one or two players. These never saw the Brawl, yet as they were written within the Brawl Universe they are shown here. Those ‘Zaps’ are not limited to the PG-13 limits Mrs. White tried so diligently to hold. Files are listed in filename alphabetical order, not time or title order. Some of these stories are the seeds that have become other stories. Some, like Unexpected Destination, brought outcries of anger from other Brawl Players. More are really forgettable. Presented here are all the files that have survived these fifteen or so years. What you are going to read are the real beginning steps of a writer. Much like the beginning steps of an artist the edges are rough, events are confused and great (GREAT) liberties are taken as a matter of course. Just remember that as of this writing (2006) that was from ten to fifteen years ago.

External Brawl Material This is material that was never meant for the Brawl. In most cases because it was much too adult.
