Chapter Seven

A banging on her case woke her up, yawning she triggered the internal release, for good or bad she was wherever she was. A single, hard looking man was waiting for her as the pod opened. She watched as he ran his eyes up and down her leather clad body. “You’re her” he said, shoving a photo into her crate. “We have to hurry cause Night patrols this area and she’s pretty good, for an amateur.”

Grabbing her small case, one that held all the passwords, combinations and keys that she would need Rebecca moved out of her now uncomfortable cocoon. Following the man she noted that her night sight was now almost as good as her day sight (she had never been outside the buildings at night since her change) though she was limited to greys instead of colours Likewise her sense of smell, now that it wasn’t clogged with chemicals and too many bodies in the same building, told her of things she knew but would never have noticed. Like the two rats to her right who, when they caught her scent vanished at light speed. Apparently in the world of who’s on top, she had just kicked the local Kings off the hill.

Making their way to a utility building the man pulled out a single key. Unlocking the door he opened it and stepped through. Rebecca followed, hearing the door close and latch behind them as a dull red light appeared. Dull to human eyes, to her eyes it was like a firebrand. “I’m supposed to take you to the next door, no further, I haven’t got keys for it anyway. So your really going to try and take on the heros?”

“Like I have a choice?” she asked sarcastically. “Its that, or being vivisected alive. If my ship hadn’t crashed I’d be light years away from this mudball by now.”

“No, I guess not.” He was silent as they walked thirty feet down a sloping tunnel. “Here’s the door, what your going to do in those old delivery tunnels I don’t know and don’t want to know. Seems like a bad choice of hideouts though.”

“I agree but they wouldn’t spring for a multi-million apartment” Rebecca told him. She had been briefed that her contacts would have bad information about her and where she would be hiding. It made sense, as if they talked nothing would be gained. Opening her case while he watched she withdrew a small ivory envelope that said ‘Door Number One’ and a small LED flashlamp. “I wanted the curtain, but you know how these games are played.” Taking out a thick brass key she entered it into the lock. A bit of resistance met her attempt to turn it, then the lock sprung free.

“Awful lot of keys” the man noted.

“Awful lot of doors in those tunnels I’m told” she replied. Pulling open the door she stepped into what for humans would be complete darkness and even for her it was dim. Turning on her flashlamp filled the next room with light, at least for her. “See you some time tiger” she told her guide, closing the door between them. There was no lock on this side but there were three thick iron bars, sliding them into place she turned to examine her situation. No other doors but there were six manholes with bent, welded re-bar attached to them. Apparently they were meant to help lift them so examining each one she noticed a slip of paper shoved into the keyhole of one. Taking it out she read what was printed on it then with a laugh she shoved the paper into a pocket, grabbed the welded iron bar forming a handle and lifted carefully.

It came up as if it weighed nothing.
