Chapter Twenty-Seven

Captain Fluffball, scourge of New York was watching Time Team on her laptop. It was an interesting show and though she wouldn’t admit it she had a crush on Brigid Gallagher. The woman wasn’t pretty but she was intelligent and that was what the feline looked for in a companion, she had earlier learned that the sensors were gone from the little diner and though normally she would be out and about tonight the feline had decided to take a day off. Three hours of dragging propane cannister’s back and forth had tired her out, especially as she had to carry the things so as not to leave a trail.

Once the show was over she yawned, deciding to get some sleep when her laptop warned her that someone was trying to connect to her disabled radio. Reaching over she picked up the main breaker, sliding it carefully into its slot and in three minutes she was looking at Pats face. “Okay, where did I screw up and when is the assassin arriving” she said in welcome, her voice filled with exhaustion.

“What the hell did you do to Professor Q” Pat asked in answer. “Reports are he’s acting very abnormally, he’s started upgrading the defenses around his house and he’s never done that before so just what did you do?”

Fluffball snickered. “I visited his house and left a note with his maid” she explained. “I told him to lay of the normals or the gloves came off.”

“Normals?” Pat asked. “What do you define as normals?”

“People without powers who are not criminals, like the Panchal’s. He set up sensors around their place, not that I will ever return but it’s the concept. Watch them this time, grill them the next then they disappear. No, I had to make a statement, he can’t move, I’ve proved that I can get past his best sensors even in a massive snowstorm. MAD.”

“MAD? You mean mutually assured destruction don’t you” Pat asked.

“Yep but it is a bluff Pat, I don’t kill. As long as he thinks I will then it’ll work, if he ever realizes that I won’t kill then I’m screwed. What’s the word on Night?”

“With her mental powers blocked she’s not as effective as she was, so she’s regulated to Scout duty. She’s spending her time flying around spotting trouble and calling it in. Something has broken her and the Professor apart too, they are still friends but no more love trysts. We are still trying to find out what happened, all we know is it happened about a week after you released her, the week after the implant scar healed.”

“More than I knew” Fluffball admitted. “How’s George?”

“He’s got the flu so he’s in bed driving me nuts wanting this and that. That’s something I don’t miss, there is hardly a human or feline disease that bothers us. I’d still rather have skin though, I look stupid in a bathing suit and don’t start me on lacy underwear.”

“Give him my best, I really miss the two of you.” Fluffball checked the clock, every transmission was limited to ten minutes unless important and catching up with Pat wasn’t considered important. “About time, anything else?”

Pat thought a moment. “One thing, I know you prefer intelligent women but any other presence?”

Fluffball smiled, a smile that Pat saw easily but humans would have trouble understanding. “I’m looking at her” she answered softly. “But she’s unavailable, lucky George.”

“Right, next time” Pat said with laughter in her eyes. A moment later the system shut down automatically.

Fluffball leaned back in her chair, stretching. ‘What the hell is Pat up to’ she wondered.
