Chapter Fourteen

Night, as was her normal routine flew slowly along her chosen patrol route, searching for any criminal activity. She wasn’t named Night because of the colour of her skin, even though it was a milk chocolate brown, no her name came from her power. Night was born with the ability to reach into any creatures mind and draw out their darkest thoughts, wither real or imagined, then make them appear as real as anything could be. Night was short for Nightmare.

Very few villains had discovered ways to combat Night’s power, knocking her unconscious was absolutely effective but you had to manage that before she was able to affect yourself. Night was fast when she needed to be and tough always. Not super strong, super fast or super intelligent, Night’s powers were limited just like everyone else. You could shoot her and she would be hurt, but it would take a very large calabur round to actually injure her badly, otherwise she was going to tear your darkest thoughts from your mind and make them real. Oh so very, very real. But ultraviolet light hurt her, hurt her badly if it was strong enough.

Because of this, her reputation and several dozen criminals still getting therapy no one broke the law after dark near her patrol area. So it was a surprise for Night when she spotted the female figure spray painting the City Hall wall. Was she a fool the hero asked herself even as she closed the distance for her power to be effective, or just an idiot? Abruptly the figure turned around and looked directly into Night’s deep brown eyes, usually the last thing any criminal remembered for weeks, if not months.

It was an almost instant recognition for Night, the dark green uniform straight out of one of her favorite movies, the furred face, even the eyes that reflected light directly back at her making them appear to glow. Landing fifty feet away from the alien, her powers maximum range, Night reached out towards the aliens mind searching for that greatest darkness. Instead she found herself surrounded by prancing ponies, colorful ponies who’s tattooed rumps defied reality.

“What the hell?” Night asked no one and everyone, then the taser darts hit her right breast dead on and with a horrified scream of pain Night fell to the pavement unconscious, those colorful winged ponies evaporating as she fled the pain in her chest.

Captain Fluffball discarded the taser’s sacrificial pod, walking over to the now silent superhero. A quick check of Night’s neck told the feline all she needed to know, Night was alive and healthy, thus would be waking soon. Opening a pouch of her utility belt Fluffball took out a pressure compress, wrapping it tightly over her prey’s mouth. Opening another pouch she withdrew a little glass vial, pouring some of its contents onto that bandage, soaking it. A chemical stink rose from the liquid, one Fluffball was careful not to inhale. Returning the now closed vial to its place she picked up the unconscious woman, walked over to a parked car and popped its trunk. In minutes the two women and the little red car were gone.

Behind them, at what would be called the crime scene two street people came out of hiding. They looked after the now vanished car and smiled. Finally, someone had taken that mind flayer nutcase off the streets. One picked up the discarded spray can, walked over to City Hall and painted ‘Alien 1, Night 0.’

The little red car drove completely out of New York to a repossessed hotel that had sat empty for three years. More than one vandal had snuck in late at night so the interior was nothing like what its previous owners had created. In fact, once valued at over two million dollars the bank, having ignored it, was now trying to offload the property for bargain basement prices. A price that they had finally found a bidder on, though they had no idea that their bidder, who had worked through an agent, was none other than Captain Fluffball herself. Now that security was restored the vandals had gone to other places and carpenters had begun working to restore the interior. At the moment though no one was present but the feline and a very bound Night. A currently very naked bound Night.

Standing over her prisoner Captain Fluffball carefully cut away the superhero’s costume. To the feline it was funny that in the comics a superhero’s costume could survive things that normal people couldn’t, but at least in the case of Night and two other real live superheros a simply pair of metal shears easily ate though the special cloth. Fluffball had no intention of harming her prize, in fact she hated the times she had been forced to harm anyone. Humiliation though was quite another thing, so once she had removed enough material, the steel cored ropes kept her from completely undressing the woman before her, she took out a powerful, and very delicate ultra-violet laser and set it at the ready. It was one of the very few things that could permanently alter Night’s body in any way and why the dark skinned superhero often avoided direct sunlight, along with powerful mercury vapor lamps and arc lamps. In this case Fluffball needed to remove a great deal of unwanted hair before continuing to her next project.

Since it was a Friday night and no one would be entering her property until Monday morning all the green clad villainess needed to worry about was running out of chloroform before she had completed her self appointed task. Glancing at the ready gallon bottle, Fluffball was pretty certain that she wouldn’t have a problem there. Singing a once popular tune she withdrew a special sapphire edged bade that had been part of her initial kit and began her work.
